In conjunction with the special exhibition, Bali: Art, Ritual, Performance, families throughout the Bay Area are invited to celebrate Mother’s Day with stories, art and cultural traditions that focus on the fabulous females from this vibrant Indonesian island. Meet Rama, Sita and the rice deity Dewi Sri while channeling your own inner god and goddess at this biannual museum-wide event celebrating the parent-child relationship. Enjoy a fun-filled day of engaging programs—all FREE with museum admission—that promise to delight and excite the imaginations of both young and old. From performances and hands-on activities to docent family tours and food tasting, there’s truly something for the entire family!

Explore and Join in

• Mask carving demonstration with I Made Suryasa 11 am-4 pm
• Interactive dance performances with mother-daughter duos from local superstars Gamelan Sekar Jaya 11:30 am-12 pm and Gadung Kasturi 12:30-1 pm
• Ritual offering and gamelan performance with Gamelan Anak Swarasanti 2:30-3 pm
• Compare West Javanese and Balinese styles of dance through eye, neck, and hand movements with Wilis Rengganiasih 3-4 pm

Make and Do 11-4

• Create a shadow puppet of a character from the Epic of Rama and bring it to life in the Wayang Puppet Theater
• Make an offering using paper and silk flowers
• Construct a mask
Make a foldable Rangda or Barong
• Try on Balinese temple clothing and dance costumes, and have your picture taken and posted to the museum’s flickr photo gallery

• Fireflies and Falling Stars: Bali Storytelling Tour 10:30-11 am, 1-1:30 & 4:00–4:30 pm
• Art Explorers’ Bali Docent Family Tour 11:15–11:30 am, 2:15–2:30 & 3:15–3:30 pm
• “Kaki Lima” food demonstration & tasting with Kompiang Metri Davies (kaki lima, literally five feet, are roving food vendors selling various types of Balinese street food) 2:00-2:30 and 2:30-3:00 pm
